United Way for Greater Austin

United Way for Greater Austin (UWATX) is a nonprofit dedicated to eradicating poverty in the Greater Austin area for more than 90 years. Our work focuses on improving and expanding early childhood education, supporting middle school students to keep them on the path to graduation, empowering low-income families and individuals through financial education, and providing health and human resource information through our free 2-1-1 helpline for the Greater Austin community.

Get Together Austin

Get Together Austin is an initiative led by UWATX to bring awareness to the importance of providing high-quality preschool for Austin’s youngest residents.

Did you know that 90% of a child’s brain develops before they are six years old? To succeed in school and in life, toddlers need to learn more than their ABC’s; they need cognitive skills, social-emotional skills, and good physical and mental health.

Children living in low-income households are less likely to gain these skills than children living in average or high-income households that can afford quality preschool. In fact, only 13% of low-income children are deemed “ready” for Kindergarten when they enter school.

Our early childhood programs work with many other community organizations to provide a variety of services tailored to each family and child, including parent education classes and affordable quality childcare and preschool programs. 89% of young children that receive these services are ready for school upon entering Kindergarten.

We recruited local caring musicians who gave their time and talents to raise awareness about the importance of preschool and the need for our community to come together as one. We shot these musicians singing their own take of the song “Get Together” by the Youngbloods, a song about joining together and seeing one another as family to create positive change—we could not have found a better song to spread our message.

By sharing the music video, adding your name to the movement and making a gift, you are giving a child the chance to succeed in life from the very beginning of their lives.

So, “come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together and try to love one another right now!”

Austin is known for being the live music capital of the world. What better way to raise awareness about this issue and drum up community support than by asking Austin’s musicians to join us first?

Find Us at Fun Fun Fun Fest

We launched this project with an interactive activation at Fun Fun Fun Fest on November 6-8, 2015.

We filmed festival attendees singing the chorus of the song, and then edited them into their own version of the music video to share with friends and family. Check out all of the attendees’ videos here!
